I was a freshman in HS when that aired and remember it freaking me out and hoping my parents didn't react the same way to me coming out.

The one thing better about the ATWT storyline, is that it surrounds a legacy family--Ryan P. was just some random kid and we never saw or heard from him and his parents soon after--plus we get to see the actual guys romantic with one another.
