GETTING PERSONAL WITH HUMPHREY
As promised we are bringing you more of HUMPHREY's Photography. This time we have asked him a few questions.
Where are you from?
H: Africa and am of African descent, andlived there until my teenage years when I moved to Canada and then the US. I am a real nomad (lived in Australia, Canada, France, Italy, Kenya, and the US).
Tell us more about your self.
H: I studied economics and languages (French, Italian, Spanish) and I taught myself about photography. I started shooting both in Kenya and while in college, and used 35mm, but moved to medium format in 2001. I work with a very, very, small crew and work only with available light. Coming from Africa with amazingly endless horizons this should come as no surprise.
Your work, your interests, and your inspiration...
H: My style has been described as raw, unscripted (no Polaroids yet), cinematographic. I love sky diving, horse riding, skiing, wines (I am a consultant in NYC), rugby, AFL (Aussie rules football).
Photographers I admire:
1. For their amazing eye and compositions: Werner Bischoff, Max Dupain, and Kingdome 19.
2. For their energy, joie-de-vivre, and style as fashion photographers: Arthur Elgort, Helmut Newton, Ellen von Unwerth.
