KAL YEE - INTERVIEW

One of the most famous fashion photographers has used a Slide technique to capture the energy of every one of his subjects. The result is an amazing book of male models, a perfect gift of art, that's sexy and lasts. Slide the Book

Kal has spent over fifteen years as one of the primary body/fashion photographers on the West Coast. In addition to his two photo books, Perfect Form and Perfect Face, Kal has photographed over 175 posters; 90 national calendars; 100 fitness covers and hundreds of editorial pages and ads (His ads and editorials have appeared in GQ, Harper's Bazaar, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, Playboy etc.).

We were really happy to get the chance to ask him a few questions:

Where do you "catch" your models?

KY: The models in Slide were mainly from model agencies in L.A., NY, and Miami. There are a few that I just found- e.g. Josh- Sailor was a dancer at a club in NY. It seems to be easier with agency models because that are not timid about shooting in underwear or nude and have on camera experience. I'm not opposed to shooting just a great guy that I find though.

What is your wildest dream ?

KY: Hmmm.... a good dream would be shooting David Beckham for a great designer's (Valentino) fashion campaign.

Tell us about Slide experience...

KY: When a model slides he drops into a very sexy mental/energetic space and I draw him into the camera. He feels that energy coursing through his body so he begins to move in a sexy way and projects that energy towards the camera; and he feels himself gravitating towards the camera ('sliding').

How did you decide to photograph 'Slide'?

KY: A friend of mine called me and said he found my last book of guys- 'Perfect Face' selling on ebay for $1,500.00. I figured there must be a following so I decided to come out with a new book of men utilizing the new 'slide' technique which I developed.

How do you see the difference between sensual and sexual?

KY: In terms of a photo I think 'sensual' evokes a sexy feeling or attraction within the viewer whereas 'sexual' refers to the model engaged in a sexual act. In a sensual image the model could be just laughing or acting goofy but if the viewer is attracted to that he will have a sensual response.

far more interesting than the location where i filmed today....oh, far better lighting in these shots....yet, visited a place that certainly had potential! the jarhead shots don't really interest me....the cell-phone camera thing -- well, it's a phenomenon but uber-tacky in some ways. love many of the shots....they hold plenty of potential beyond cancerous limitations. and some people call themselves educators....hitler and pedophile priests may have considered the same thing -- i think that there is a far more peaceful and beautiful approach, but.....anyhow, thanks for a bit of color!
